SMARTERehab - Temporomandibular Dysfunction: Movement Analysis, Sub-classification & Neuromuscular Retraining

Description du cours

Temporomandibular pain is closely related to motor control of the cervical spine, shoulder girdle, as well as orofacial dysfunction. Research has also implicated psychological reactions, sensory motor function and temporomandibular joint mechanics. This course will cover strategies to assess and rehabilitate the motor control deficits of the temporomandibular, cervical spine, shoulder girdle and orofacial regions. The relationship between the temporomandibular joint, cervical and shoulder girdle will be discussed. Specific strategies to assess and rehab proprioception and other sensorimotor functions in these regions will be addressed. The movement pattern of the temporomandibular joint will be covered with specific reference to the neurodevelopmental process. Appropriate screening tests will be used to assess if other health care professionals are required for management. Motor control retraining strategies will be introduced using a comprehensive clinical reasoning process. This involves specific activation of the appropriate stability muscles to control functional head and shoulder girdle movement, and integration of these training strategies into a wider base of rehabilitation options.

It is an advantage to have taken the Cervical Spine and Shoulder Girdle courses, but they are not prerequisites.

Objectifs spécifiques du cours

• Diagnose movement pattern control deficits of the TMJ.
• Apply a clinical prediction rule to know who will need and respond to specific motor control stability exercises for the TMJ, shoulder girdle and cervical spine.
• Understand the inter-relationship between scapular, cervical, and temporomandibular movement pattern control.
• Identify suitable starting points and appropriate progressions of motor control stability exercises.
• Progress temporomandibular movement pattern control into function.
• Integrate the treatment of motor control stability training with other techniques into clinical practice.
