Description du cours
The sacro-iliac joint (SIJ) and hip are common sources of musculoskeletal pain and frequently occur together. This may be related to the overlapping stability function of the muscles for the regions. Symptoms may be due to trauma, pregnancy and may be related to a region distant from the SIJ and hip. The presentations are most commonly insidious and recurring. Regardless of the onset, the underlying mechanism is frequently due to poor movement and motor control issues. This informative practically orientated course will review the concepts of SIJ form and force closure. The tests that help in the diagnosis of the SIJ and hip as a source of pain will be covered in detail during practical sessions as well as a battery of tests to challenge force closure and translation control at the SIJ and hip, respectively.
The diagnosis of an abnormal movement pattern allows the development of a specific retraining program to regain functional stability of the SIJ and hip. Common physical diagnoses are described within the framework of analyzing and correcting the movement patterns that place excessive stress on these regions. Participants will also learn how the assessment of movement patterns can help in the clinical reasoning in the assessment and diagnosis of the SIJ.
Strategies to rehabilitate the SIJ and hip using specific motor control exercises will be covered in detail. There will be detailed problem solving strategies and along with appropriate starting points and clinical progressions for local and global muscles. Sensory motor and neurological rehabilitation strategies will also be covered.
Objectifs spécifiques du cours
- Take an appropriate history and complete a physical assessment to diagnose the SIJ and/or hip as a source of pain.
- Perform a battery of tests to challenge the force closure of the SIJ and translation control of the hip.
- Understand how altered movement distant to these regions can influence movement at the SIJ and hip.
- Problem solve using a rehabilitation program using specific motor control exercises.
